More to explore

To Sua Ocean Trench
Ocean trench · Upolu · South Coast
A 30-metre-deep collapsed lava tube on Upolu's south coast, fed by an underwater channel that lets the open Pacific flow in and out with the tide. A long wooden ladder spirals down to a small floating dock — the climb makes the swim feel earned. Surrounded by manicured native gardens with showers, picnic fales and a small mini-mart selling cold drinks. Skilled divers can swim through the cave passage to the open sea.

Lalomanu Beach
Beach · Upolu · Aleipata
A perfect crescent of white sand on Upolu's south-east tip, framed by the offshore islets of Nu'utele and Nu'ulua — the postcard view of Samoa. The lagoon stays calm and shallow well out from the shore; snorkel is gentle and the sunset is the kind that ends a holiday well. Beach fales and small resorts line the road behind, so you can step from your room straight onto the sand. Pay the small village fee at the kiosk on the way in.

Piula Cave Pool
Natural pool · Upolu · Atua
A spring-fed freshwater pool inside a sea-cave on the grounds of Piula Theological College, on Upolu's north coast 26km east of Apia. The water is glass-clear and cool — small reef fish slip through an underwater passage that connects two cathedral-quiet grottos. A short, slippery walk down from the road; bring reef shoes and underwater goggles. Closed Sundays.

Papapapaitai Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · Cross-Island
A 100-metre single drop into a deep gorge on the Cross-Island Road — Samoa's tallest waterfall. There's no path down; the falls are viewed strictly from the roadside lookout. Best after rain (Nov–Apr) when the volume is at its biggest, but even in the dry season the gorge alone is worth the stop.

Sopoaga Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · South Coast
Powerful tiered falls on Upolu's south side viewed from a private clifftop garden that includes a re-creation of a traditional Samoan village. The drop is dramatic — best after rain when the river is full — and the gardens themselves are worth a slow wander.

Togitogiga Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · South Coast
A wide tiered waterfall and chain of natural swimming pools at the eastern entrance to O Le Pupu-Pu'e National Park. Easy roadside parking, changing rooms and toilets on site, and the lower pool is shallow enough for kids. A favourite local picnic spot — busy on weekends, quiet midweek.

Sauniatu Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · Inland
Picturesque cascade in a quiet inland village originally settled by Latter-day Saint converts in the 1860s. The river pool below the falls is a popular swim, and the whole area is landscaped — manicured lawns, plumeria trees, a small church. Pay the village fee at the gate.

Papase'ea Sliding Rocks
Natural pool · Upolu · Apia
A trio of natural rock waterslides on the Vaisigano River, just outside Apia in Faleata district. Climb up the rocks, sit down, slide into the swimming hole below — best in the wet season (Nov–Apr) when the river is fuller and the slides are slicker. Slippery, fun, and very much a Samoan family weekend outing.

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum
Museum · Upolu · Apia
The restored colonial house at Vailima where Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson spent his last four years and is buried on the mountain above. Knowledgeable guides walk you through the family rooms, library and his writing study, with stories of how he became "Tusitala" — teller of tales — to the Samoans who adopted him. Allow ninety minutes for the tour plus an extra hour for the Mt Vaea trail to his tomb. Closed Sundays.

Mt Vaea Track
Mountain · Upolu · Apia
Trail behind the RLS Museum climbing 470m to Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb on the summit. Two routes — the short, steep "Road of Loving Hearts" (~30 min up) and the longer southern ridge path (~1.5 hr up) — both end at a low stone tomb with sweeping views over Apia harbour. Best in early morning to avoid the heat.

Apia Fish Market
Market · Upolu · Apia
Pre-dawn auction at Apia Wharf where local boats land yellowfin tuna, mahimahi and reef fish straight off the line. Ice-glazed slabs are slapped onto wooden tables, prices argued in Samoan, and the whole thing wraps before mid-morning. Best from 5–7am, especially Saturdays. A reminder that Apia is still very much a working harbour town.

Namua Island
Island · Upolu · Aleipata
Small island just off Upolu's east coast in Aleipata, accessed by short boat ride from Lalomanu. Family-run beach fales, snorkel-with-turtles in the lagoon, walking trails up the bluff for east-coast views, and the kind of quiet that comes only from being on an island off an island.
Manono Island
Island · Manono · Apolima Strait
Car-free island in the Apolima Strait, accessible from Manono-uta wharf on Upolu's western tip via a small village boat (no fixed timetable, ~10 min crossing). The 5km coastal path passes seven villages, an ancient star-mound, the swimming pool of Tui Manono and church bells made from old WW2 oxygen tanks. A half-day in another century.

Aganoa Black Sand Beach
Beach · Upolu · South Coast
Volcanic black-sand beach on Upolu's south coast, reached via a short 4WD track or a 15-minute walk in from the road. Wild and rarely crowded — lava flows extend out under the water and the contrast against the surf is striking. Best at low tide; bring shoes for the rocky entry.

O Le Pupu-Pu'e National Park
National park · Upolu · South Coast
Samoa's first national park (1978), spanning 50km² from the south coast up to the rainforest summit of Mt Fito. Highlights: a coastal lava-cliff walk where the Pacific crashes against ancient flows, the giant Ma Tree with buttress roots fanning across the forest floor, and Togitogiga Falls and pools at the eastern boundary. Marked trails are good; arrange a guide for the deeper rainforest hikes.

Lake Lanoto'o
Wildlife · Upolu · Inland
Bright-green volcanic crater lake high in the central Upolu rainforest, ringed by dense bush and full of feral goldfish (introduced in the 1880s and now thriving). The 6km return hike from the road climbs through cloud forest with several muddy stretches — wear good shoes, take a guide if rains have been heavy. The lake itself is shallow but cold and remarkably clear.
Alofaaga Blowholes
Natural pool · Savaii · South Coast
Volcanic vents in the basalt shelf at Taga village on Savai'i's south-west coast, where each big swell forces seawater 20+ metres into the air. Locals will toss a coconut into the smaller hole on a good day so you can watch it rocket skyward. Best on incoming tide with a southerly swell — the bigger the surf, the bigger the show.

Mu Pagoa Falls
Waterfall · Savaii · South Coast
Wide rope-of-water cascade where Samoa's largest river flows directly into the Pacific on Savai'i's south coast. View from the bridge above; small, calm pools below the lower falls are safe to swim. WST 5 village fee.

Afu Aau Waterfall
Waterfall · Savaii · South Coast
A spring-fed waterfall on Savai'i with a deep, cool, blue-green swimming pool below — one of the best swims on the island. Lush, shaded, and rarely busy. Pay the small village fee and bring snacks; there's no shop on site.

Vavau Beach
Beach · Upolu · South Coast
Quiet south-coast beach on Upolu with reef just offshore — sheltered swimming and gentle snorkelling. A few small fales tucked into the trees, no resorts. Worth a stop on the drive between Apia and Lalomanu.

Falefa Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · East Coast
Roadside falls on Upolu's east coast viewed from a lookout on the Cross-Island Road, just past Falefa village. The river drops in a long V-shape to a pool below — best after rain (Nov–Apr). A 60-second photo stop on the way to or from the south coast.

Giant Clam Sanctuary
Wildlife · Upolu · South Coast
Marine reserve at Savaia village on south Upolu, protecting hundreds of giant clams in the shallow lagoon. Snorkel-only access — the clams sit two-to-three metres down, brilliant blue-and-green mantles cracking open and closed. Pay the village fee, bring your own gear.

Faleolo International Airport
Airport · Upolu · Faleolo
Samoa's main international airport, 35km west of Apia. ATMs and currency exchange in arrivals, prepaid SIMs at the Digicel and Vodafone counters, taxis to Apia run about WST 60, and most rental car counters are at the kerb. The hub for inter-island flights to Pago Pago and Auckland.

Salelologa Market
Market · Savaii · Salelologa
Savai'i's main market by the Salelologa ferry wharf — the first stop for most travellers stepping off the ferry. Fresh produce, woven goods, fish, and a tight cluster of stalls selling local lunches (palusami, breadfruit chips, baked taro). Mornings are best.
.jpg?width=1200)
Apia Township
Township · Upolu · Apia
Samoa's capital and the centre of business, government, food and nightlife. Mulivai Cathedral on the harbour front, the wedding-cake Government Building at Mulinu'u, the old clock tower, the Fugalei market and the long evening promenade along Beach Road. Most travellers base here for at least their first and last nights.

Samoa Cultural Village
Cultural site · Upolu · Apia
Apia's flagship cultural experience — run by the Samoa Tourism Authority at the Tourism Fale on Beach Road. A hands-on showcase of fa'a Samoa: a traditional 'ava (kava) ceremony, weaving demonstrations (visitors plait coconut-leaf plates that are used later in the food tasting), tatau (tattoo) demonstrations, umu (earth-oven) cooking — where, as the guides explain, the men do most of the work, layering taro and fish over hot stones — and a siva (dance) performance. Allow 2–3 hours for the full program. Admission is WST 20 per adult and WST 5 per child aged 6–12 (under 4 free). A separate evening fiafia + dinner is also bookable on-site.

Return to Paradise Beach
Beach · Upolu · Lefaga
White-sand lagoon beach at Lefaga that took its name from the 1953 Gary Cooper film shot here. Reef just offshore for snorkelling, picnic fales for shade and a long stretch of empty sand that feels worlds away from Apia despite being only an hour's drive. Best at low tide for tide pools, high tide for swimming. Small village fee at the gate.

Fuipisia Falls
Waterfall · Upolu · East Coast
55-metre single drop in eastern Upolu. Short bush walk from the road; bathing pool at the top of the falls and viewing platforms over the gorge.

Liua le Vai o Sina
Waterfall · Upolu · Inland
Waterfall hike accessed via Lalotalie River Retreat — combines a guided bush walk, river-pool swim and short cultural village stop. Books out: arrange ahead.

Manase Beach
Beach · Savaii · North Coast
A long crescent of white sand on Savai'i's north coast, lined with a string of low-key beach-fale resorts and family-run cafés. Easy reef snorkelling at the calm end and the launch point for hikes to Mt Matavanu and the Saleaula Lava Fields. The classic Savai'i sunset. Most accommodation is paid in cash.

Saleaula Lava Fields
Cultural site · Savaii · North Coast
Eerie black plains of cooled lava on Savai'i's north coast, marking where the 1905–1911 Mt Matavanu eruption swept five villages into the sea. The roofless church — half-buried, with a single grave inside the nave that the lava is said to have flowed around — is the not-to-miss stop. Quietly haunting; the photo on this page is the actual eruption captured by Thomas Andrew in 1905.

Mt Silisili
Mountain · Savaii · Central
Samoa's highest peak (1,858 m). Two-to-three day guided hike through cloud forest on Savai'i — arrange a guide through the village of A'opo. For experienced hikers only.

Mt Matavanu
Mountain · Savaii · North Central
The volcano whose 1905–1911 eruption created the Saleaula Lava Fields below. A short walk leads to the rim above a green forested crater — about 45 minutes return through bush — and you can sometimes spot the deeper crater that's now an unofficial picnic spot. Trail starts behind Manase. Wear shoes that can handle loose volcanic rock.

Mt Fito
Mountain · Upolu · South Coast
Upolu's highest peak (1,100 m), tucked inside O Le Pupu-Pu'e National Park. Rainforest summit with views toward Apolima Strait — guided hike only.

Pulemelei Mound
Cultural site · Savaii · Palauli
The largest and most ancient structure in all of Polynesia — a 12-metre-tall, 61×50-metre stepped stone mound built between 1100 and 1400 AD on the Letolo Plantation in Palauli. Climb to the top for a sweeping view over the south Savai'i jungle. Pay the village fee at the plantation gate; the path can be muddy after rain.
Satoalepai Turtle Sanctuary
Wildlife · Savaii · North Coast
Village-run turtle pool on Savai'i's north coast where green turtles are hand-fed and visitors can swim alongside them. About 30 minutes from Manase. Note: these are captive turtles in a freshwater pool — for genuine wild-turtle encounters Manase or Lano lagoons are better.

Falealupo Beach
Beach · Savaii · Falealupo
White sand and wild blue lagoon at the westernmost tip of Samoa — the last sunset of any day on Earth, technically. Excellent reef snorkelling, deep historical significance to the village (the gates of the spirits are said to be near here).

Vaisala Beach
Beach · Savaii · North Coast
Quiet north-coast beach with freshwater springs bubbling up where the lagoon meets the sand. Excellent snorkelling, sparse facilities — bring your own picnic.

Lano Beach
Beach · Savaii · East Coast
Pristine east-coast beach with turquoise lagoon waters and several beach-fale operators. Turtles regularly seen in the lagoon. Day-trippers welcome at the village fales.

Satuiatua Beach
Beach · Savaii · South Coast
Long sweeping bay on Savai'i's south coast popular for swimming and snorkelling at low tide, surfing at high. Beach-fale resort runs lunch service for day-trippers.

Paia Dwarf's Cave
Cultural site · Savaii · South Coast
Underground lava tube system at Paia village — knee-deep wading through dark tunnels with a guide and torches, emerging at a hidden swimming pool. Moderate physical effort, definitely not for the claustrophobic.

Mt Tafua
Mountain · Savaii · East Coast
Twin volcanic craters on Savai'i's sunrise coast, with a short walk through dense rainforest to panoramic views over the south coast and the lava fields beyond. Easier than Mt Matavanu; doable in a half-day.

The indoor hall is lined with booths selling Samoan handicrafts — carved wooden ornaments, woven pandanus fine mats, printed lavalava, island shirts, traditional and contemporary jewellery, siapo cloth and kilikiti bats. A dedicated food court serves local fast food and Samoan dishes (oka, sapasui, palusami, umu plates) with a children's playground alongside. It is Samoa's first solar-powered government building. Right behind it on the waterfront sits the Savalalo bus station — where you can catch Samoa's colourful wooden buses — with the Apia Fish Market opposite.
