Mt Matavanu

Mt Matavanu is a volcano on Savaii whose 1905–1911 eruption created the Saleaula Lava Fields. A short walk of about 45 minutes return leads through bush to the crater rim, which overlooks a green forested crater. The trail starts behind Manase, and visitors can sometimes spot the deeper crater below, an unofficial picnic spot. Wear sturdy shoes that grip loose volcanic rock. Open year-round Monday to Saturday.
