Va-i-moana
About this property
Va-i-moana sits on Savai'i's quiet north-west coast at Asau, well off the main visitor circuit. The property is run as a small resort with a mix of room types — open Samoan fales through to ensuite suites with air conditioning — managed by Telei and her team. A protected bay-front position with hammocks under the palms is the headline draw. Meals are taken in the open-air restaurant, which has a strong local reputation for its fresh seafood. Breakfast is included for most stays and presented as a small buffet of fresh fruit and local dishes; lunch and dinner are à-la-carte with bar service through the day. Guests staying multiple nights regularly note the food as a highlight. Asau is genuinely remote — roughly 90 minutes by road from Salelologa wharf — so most visitors arrive by hire car. The room stock varies more in age and finish than the listing photos suggest; the open-fale and shared-bathroom options are the most rustic, while the Tui Moana ensuites are the most modern. Worth booking the room type that matches your expectations.

Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Savai'i, Samoa
Savai'i is the second-largest island in Polynesia and Samoa's quiet half — most travellers spend two or three nights here on a Samoa trip. Accommodation is mostly family-run: traditional beach fales along the coast, a handful of mid-range resorts, and a few eco-lodges set back from the road.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Had such a lovely relaxing time here. It was a last minute booking after the beach fale we were staying in somewhere else came apart in a storm 😂. More of a personal, local feel than the big resorts we stayed at and staff were the friendliest we came across! They can’t do enough to help you. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Great music throughout the day and traditional decor which we loved. Had amazing activities on site- volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling etc and such a beautiful relaxing cove to read a book and pass the time. We traveled with a 1 year old and they were so amazing with her and she loved running around the beautiful grounds. The rooms are simple but clean however it looked like they were building down brand new beachfront rooms which will be more luxe if that’s what you’re after. 5 stars for service and relaxation. They can organise a cocoa tour of the plantation across the road which I highly recommend. One of our highlights!

The location is great, and it is a very relaxing place to be. The room we were in was not in great shape, though the communal area was pretty good. Some of the staff were great and a couple seemed constantly annoyed. There aren't many options around this part of the island, and this one is ok to escape to. 10/10 for kayaking.

We really enjoyed stay in Moana resort. Nice beach, calm, quiet and good food! But I recommend book stay directly their websites or booking, I try Hotels.com (expedia) and resort didn't get any info about our coming from them, also communication with Hotels.com was terrible for getting money back. Anyway stuff in resort was really nice and helpful with this problem, cause we weren't first customers with this problem. And we recommend rent car, cause is far from harbour and with public bus is soo complicated.

We want to sincerely thank the wonderful team at Vai i Moana Resort, and especially Telei the manager, for being so kind and attentive during our stay. From check-in to check-out, the staff take care of you in every detail, making sure you enjoy the best experience. The accommodation is true local style — a little older than the photos online, which at first might surprise you, but in the end you spend your days enjoying their private paradise. It’s cosy, the breakfasts are amazing, and even though the resort could benefit from a renovation, the warmth of the team and the soul of the place shine through. Keep up the great work — we will remember this stay fondly.
