Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

The new front desk staff provided great customer service. However, the service for the room and restaurant was very disappointing. The room was dirty, the water was not running properly, and housekeeping did not clean or restock towels during our stay, requiring us to repeatedly ask for basic items. Ordering food from the restaurant was also frustrating, with wait times of at least an hour each time, even when the restaurant was empty.

Our favourite Fia Fia night on the island! Nearly 30 musicians and dancers, including incredible fire dancing. The performance was completely authentic with no amplified music, just traditional drums and guitars. It’s held every Saturday night and, amazingly, it’s donation-only for hotel guests. We were honestly shocked this wasn’t advertised more widely before we arrived. Snorkelling just offshore was also excellent once you swim out far enough. Just be sure to time it with the tides, as the currents can get quite strong.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend booking this place. It’s an old, run down hotel and is being sold as independent villas on Airbnb. It is in need of serious maintenance. On arriving there were mangy street dogs running through the property including the hotel lobby and grounds. The receptionist denied that we had already paid, then showed us to a dark, dirty room that was infested with ants and had a giant cockroach being eaten alive in the middle of the floor. Despite seeing this they left us to the room where we were appalled by the cleanliness and condition. There’s a reason the photos are vague on booking websites. We couldn’t justify staying there and certainly not eating there, so had to leave and find somewhere else to stay and are now out of pocket.

This place has such great potential but unfortunately it fell short especially regarding housekeeping and breakfast. We arrived late from Savaii, so was very tired. We had 3 garden villas and a guesthouse booked, 2 of the villas didn't have enough towels for the number of occupants booked. One of the towels had stains, we stayed 2 nights and didn't even get our toiletries refreshed so one little bottle of shampoo and conditioner between 2 guests for 2 nights? Brekky options was very limited, there are heaps of cheap and tasty options that would have made it better, koko alaisa, or suafa'i or the round panikekes. Authentic samoan if you got the housekeeping and brekky right it would've been a way better experience. Also no pool or beach towels for guests?

My partner and I started here at the start of our trip in Samoa for two nights. When we arrived we were informed that the deposit was never taken from my account so we would need to pay that again, luckily I had a screenshot and proof that this had been done at the time of the booking. Unsure whether this was an attempt to get more money from us or whether the lady genuinely didn’t know we had paid the deposit already. I found the staff to be quite standoffish with me, and when delivering the food to the table there was no smile or anything but my partner and I noticed that they were always friendly with him. The food was some of the worst we ate while on our holiday, the wait was very long and the food was not great and rather overpriced. A complimentary breakfast was included in our breakfast, on the first morning we ordered from the menu titled “complimentary breakfast” at the top as no one told us otherwise or where to find the complimentary breakfast nor were the any signs etc so we ended up paying additional for an average breakfast as turns out this was not included. Rooms were okay, very dated compared to the photos and the power turns off when the key is taken from the room so no AC is able to be kept on to keep the room cool. We overheard another group say they had bed bugs but we didn’t experience this so can’t confirm whether that is true or not. The location is good and close to the cave pool, and the pool is good too although the tiles are very slippery. With a few improvements and better service, the resort has the potential to be great but unfortunately is not quite there.
