Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best beach fales in Samoa: traditional open-air stays
The beach fale (pronounced FAH-leh) is Samoa's signature stay — a traditional thatched-roof hut, open to the ocean breeze, on the sand. You sleep on a mattress with a mosquito net, the family runs the kitchen, and dinner is whatever was caught that day. It's the cheapest and most authentic way to stay in Samoa.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Stayed in Villa #1, perfect layout, extremely comfortable and spacious. Superb ocean view, friendly and accommodating staff upon our arrival. Savi'i wharf within walking distance and shops.

We stayed here for 2 nights, waking up to the sunrise was amazing! The rooms are clean and spacious. The bathrooms are huge. The location was perfect.

Great view and location being close to the wharf. We had intended to have a nicer place to stay for our last night in Samoa, however this was thwarted by the presence of a bed bug which significantly dampened the feeling of relaxation and ability to unwind.

This place is absolutely stunning. The villa is spacious, beautifully presented and maintained. The views from the deck are unbelievable. Breakfast is delivered to the room each morning by friendly staff. We loved our time here.

This spot is one of the most simple and beautiful spots we stayed in Samoa. Because we couldn’t get our car on the ferry, we walked on and wanted to stay somewhere close. This is a 5 minute walk (or probably less if you don’t have a suitcase) from the ferry and right next door to rental scooters. The room had great aircon, was very clean and spacious, and we had THE BEST sunrise out of all of our stays in both Upolu and Savaii. The owner and his family and team are also soooo lovely and helpful. Very grateful to have stayed here for a night!! 🙏 if you stay, make sure to leave the curtains open for the sunrise to wake you up!
