Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Great place. You get what you pay for and I am happy. The buffet breakfast is an awesome way to start the day.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Alec Hotel and I can say it was one of the best experiences I’ve had. From the moment our family arrived, Lole was incredibly welcoming and attentive, making us feel right at home. The room was nice and equipped with all the amenities we needed. The beds were comfortable. The hotel’s facilities were good, we especially enjoyed the pool, kids loved it which added so much to the overall experience. The location was perfect – close to town, laundry-mat (they do laundry at hotel too for $30tala per load), quiet enough to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. Overall, Alec Hotel (Lole & staff) went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfort & privacy at reasonable prices!

Can’t ever remember staying at a worse hotel than this. No available WiFi despite advertising it. Supposedly “vouchers” were gone? Cockroaches running across the floor every 5 min. And of course, no hot water in the morning for a broken shower covered in mold. I don’t think I’ll be checking out the “breakfast” that’s supposed to be offered. On the bright side the bed was clean.

The price was reasonable for the facilities, the staff very friendly and helpful ( thank you Ester & Tala) The beds and linen were the best we experienced during our stay in Samoa, such a treat after foam mattresses, hard wood beds and synthetic sheets at many places that cost a lot more than Alec’s. Good having a jug and microwave in the room . Great breakfast supplied. Lynn’s supermarket close by for supplies & Giordanos across the road has great food and good prices. Enjoyed our stay . Thanks

I had a wonderful experience at the Hotel! While it may be a bit on the expensive side, the amenities made it worth every penny. The pool was delightful and the air-conditioning provided a much-needed escape from the heat. Additionally, its convenient location close to Apia town and the hospital was an added bonus. The staff were absolutely lovely and made me feel right at home. I highly recommend this place for a comfortable stay!
