Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best beach fales in Samoa: traditional open-air stays
The beach fale (pronounced FAH-leh) is Samoa's signature stay — a traditional thatched-roof hut, open to the ocean breeze, on the sand. You sleep on a mattress with a mosquito net, the family runs the kitchen, and dinner is whatever was caught that day. It's the cheapest and most authentic way to stay in Samoa.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

A hidden gem not too far off the beaten path. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Aniva's Place. I'm here on business and am so comfortable that I haven't even bothered to look for a rental. It's been a month and the business owner, Aniva, gives discounted rates for extended stays. I don't see myself leaving until my business here is done. (I've been here for over a month.) Aniva runs a tight ship. Breakfast is always lovely. The staff is super helpful. I rarely lock my room unless others check in; and often leave my door open here. It's a home. It doesn't feel like a commercial business. Oh! Aniva knows just about everyone on this island, so if you need advice or a contact, she's an excellent resource and an all around great person. Folks from all walks of life are treated with respect here. It's a safe place.

Excellent location, 3 minutes walk to Tupua Tamasese Hospital, 5 -10 minutes walk to Scalini Restaurant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The place is in excellent condition with free breakfast. Very nice and quiet. Pool is well maintained. The owner itself is such a beautiful and adorable soul. Thank you Aniva for your hospitality. I look forward to my next vacation and would recommend Aniva's Place to anyone looking for a reasonable accommodation in Apia S & L Kirifi

Enjoyed our stay at Aniva's. Clean, comfortable, and super friendly. Banana pancakes for breakfast were delicious!! We chose not to have air conditioning, but it was fine with just the ceiling fan. Pool was lovely to cool off in. Can walk into town from here easily enough. Recommend.

This was a great homestay. Our first place in Samoa without any cracks or holes, simply a nice room in a big house. The climate im the room is good even without AC. Unfortunately, the weather was too bad to use the pool, but it looked well maintained. The breakfast is a nice selection of fruits, pancakes and other food. Make sure to book directly through her website if possible.
