Vaiula Beach Fales
About this property
Vaiula Beach Fales sits on Tafatafa beach on Upolu's south coast, run by Nug, Dave, Sina and Hilary as a small family operation. The defining detail in reviewer feedback is the chef, Seena, whose dinners are repeatedly singled out as generous and well-cooked. The fales are traditional open-air structures right on the beach — guests recommend rolling up the side coverings in hot weather to let the trade winds through. At high tide the water can come up under the fales (part of the appeal for some, less so for others); the open-air shower and bar are part of the same beach-side setup. The bar serves proper coffee in the morning. Vaiula is also the launch point for an on-site snorkelling tour to Nu'usafe'e island, run by Nug — repeatedly highlighted by guests as among the best snorkelling on Upolu. Nearby waterfalls, walks, and the To Sua ocean trench are all 10-20 minutes by road or scooter. Meals: rates include breakfast and dinner. The Expedia listing shows "Free Dinner" on the Traditional Beach Fale, and a verified guest review notes "free breakfast and supper were delicious."

Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

We did the snorkelling tour with Nug with our group prior to my wife and my wedding and it was an awesome day on the water. Nug took us to some great snorkelling spots and we also got to relax on our own private island. To finish off the day we went back to fale for beers, margaritas and the best pizzas on the island. Thanks for an awesome day out Nug!

We did not stay at the beach fales but did the snorkelling tour with Nug. Best snorkelling we did in Samoa hands down. It's a magical boat ride out to Nuusafe island with colourfully reef. We had 3 snorkelling stops and got to explore the island. Finished off with a burger and beer at their bar. Highly recommend if you're staying nearby.

Vaiula Beach is a little slice of paradise surrounded by fun waves, crystal clear water and stunning reefs. Nugs, Dave, Sina and Hilary are the friendliest hosts you could ask for and the vibes were always great. Cant wait to come back!

We arrived late afternoon and stayed for 4 nights. The location is great with waterfalls, walks and the ocean trench all short 10-20 min drives away! We had a hire scooter which needed a slow speed going down the drive as there is lava rocks and slightly uneven but completely doable. We stayed in one of the beach fales (during our stay the other two were in use) we still felt our room was very private. Highly recommend rolling up the base of the coverings in the hot weather to allow a breeze to blow through the fale. We borrowed the broom from the dining area to help manage the sand with great success! There are no chargers in fales but in dining area there is PowerPoints up high to charge or across the property at the bar. The breakfast and dinner are simple and delicious. Made by Sina. David and Sina will sometimes join at meal times which makes it feel more personal. The toilet and showers- All showers (2 stalls and 1 outdoor) and tubing w cold water- easy to adjust to the temperature as weather is hot and manage. To be expected of a fale stay. Toilet stalls were clean, woman’s had small rubbish bins. Just ask for soap and toilet paper to be provided as sometimes goes missing. We had a great stay and loved it here. We plan to come back next year!! Thank you to Sina, David and Tala who helps out on the property :)

Cool open air fales on the beach. We had water under ours at high tide but the noise at night was delightful. Clean and tidy. Open air shower was great. Dinner average but large. Bar serves proper coffee.

A beautiful place to stay! The beach is lovely, with charming fales right by the water. There’s plenty to do - snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding, and even visiting a nearby cave pool. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Breakfast is simple but satisfying, and the dinners prepared by Seena were absolutely delicious and generous. She’s truly a fantastic chef. The bar, run by Nug and Hilary, made the experience even better with their warm hospitality. There are also a couple of friendly dogs roaming around the property. If you’re looking for an authentic Samoan experience, this is a perfect spot to stay.
