Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from family-run beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.
Kitesurfing in Samoa: lessons, rentals and where to base yourself
Samoa is not a famous kite destination, which is part of the appeal: one dedicated school, uncrowded water and lessons in English, French or Spanish. Seki Kitesurf at Sataoa, on the south coast of Upolu, is the country's only kiteboarding lessons and rental centre, run by an IKO-certified instructor.

We have just had the pleasure of spending 8 nights with our teenage children at Coconuts. A holiday and memories we will treasure. The resort was just what we were after, offering a relaxed chilled unpretentious vibe that integrates so well with the surroundings. All staff we encountered, from airport transfers, night watchmen, reception, restaurant, spa and housekeeping staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. Thank you for helping make our Samoan experience so memorable.

Lovely resort, we have been a couple of times now, won't return. Beautiful lagoon for snorkelling, lovely rooms, nice food at restaurant, although expensive and quite repetitive. Staff are mostly great, welcoming and friendly. Ordering a drink from the bartender felt like we were inconveniencing her. Owner wandering around constantly really detracts from the vibe. He seemed to want to be involved in everything, wasn't particularly kind to staff in a couple of private interactions witnessed, interrupted our conversations to read from the 'having a good time?' script. Value for money is just not there, especially compared to other options.

We spent five nights in a Luxury Over-The-Water Room, and its a little hard to review truly. A four is honestly being a little generous, and it would likely be a 3, but it could be a 4-5 with a few improvements. Firstly, there is a bit of an odd overall vibe that's been mentioned in other reviews; but it didn't have the regular "vibe" you may be used to finding at other resorts. No music, no bars open late (they were closed by 9pm the nights we were there) and not a large amount of atmosphere overall. This in itself, is fine, but if you're there for relaxing in your room the rooms themselves also have no music, no entertainment and rules about no drinking or eating; so you are a little limited to what you can do. We had books and boardgames etc, but others may struggle with just that. Most of the staff we're friendly, though we tried calling reception 4 times to no answer (which meant we had to walk there). There is no path to the over the water bungalows so if you arrive early morning prepare to lug your luggage over sand (same with leaving - we tried to call reception to no answer). It would be great to have a path from the reception to the bungalows if possible! The food was nice, most of the staff were lovely (shout-out to Genesis) and the dancing show was great fun. We came 'peak season' and it was very quiet, which we certainly didnt mind - but with a few changes would have made the stay a little nicer overall.

We just stayed 5 nights in the treehouse suite. Beautiful beaches on site, relaxing pool side, and spacious rooms with comfortable beds. Lovely staff and a great location on Upolu to explore the rest of the island, and easy to take a stroll to the neighbouring resorts too if you wanted. We especially enjoyed the Oka and Poke from the menu. Thank you everyone at Coconuts Resort!

Mica Restaurant review - Have been to the restaurant twice and the waiters were rude and not friendly. Had NZ steak both nights and it was very grisly. It was second grade steak and it was expensive.
