Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Our Virgin flight from Australia into Apia was delayed by a drunken passenger causing trouble who needed to be booted off, so we ended up arriving at Sinalei Resort fairly late on Saturday night. The staff were gracious and welcoming, gave us a quick check in so we could get to the restaurant in time to eat a beautiful Samoan fish dinner. After a big sleep in what we later found out was the same bed King Charles slept in 2 years beforehand, we finalised our checkin. Some complex verbal and email discussions regarding our booking which was made a few weeks prior was easily sorted by Selau, the resort manager, with special thanks also to Amarino. It’s been a rainy first day, but I took on the short par3 golf course in barefoot, had another lazy snooze in “Charlie’s lounge”, played some cards, had an amazing poke bowl for lunch, and we’ll head off for Sunday afternoon church with the locals soon. I write this early message on day 2 of a 7 night stay to offer early thanks to Selau and her staff for adapting to us, and solving a complex booking riddle, and making us feel so welcome in this beautiful country. The crazed guy on the flight made it a hard start, but we feel very much at home. Thanks Sinalei staff. I’m loving Sinalei Resort. It’s very different from the “big Fiji resorts”, and it’s definitely my style - it’s quieter, more laid back, simpler, expansive, but with the same pacific welcome. Looking forward to the sun coming out tomorrow.

Stopped here for lunch while holidaying in Samoa. They had a few vegan options on the menu but the very helpful staff talked to the chef who made up a Vegan Platter especially for us. Very nice and lovely setting, with view out over the lagoon.

Myself and five other travel companions had an absolutely wonderful week at Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa. From the moment we were picked up at the airport with the transfer service until we were dropped off at the end of our stay, everything was exceptional. A special mention to Sio, our transfer driver and guide, who was fantastic. His sense of humour, warm personality, and knowledge of Samoa's history and culture made every journey enjoyable and informative. Lanau, who always seemed to be there at breakfast and dinner, greeted us each day with the loveliest, bubbliest smile. She was an absolute delight to chat with and truly made us feel welcome. Peta also deserves a mention for having my morning coffee ready every day before I even had to ask – such a thoughtful touch that didn't go unnoticed. The resort itself is set in a stunning location, with beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere. The food was delicious, the cocktails were spot on, and nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff. The genuine hospitality and friendliness of everyone at the resort made our stay incredibly memorable. Thank you to the entire Sinalei team for such a fantastic holiday. We can't wait to visit again!

It is always a little awkward not to write a good review but it help everyone else to get the picture. • + The resort and the facilities are incredible beautiful, so as the villas with open bathroom and the few things they offer are okay..also the staff is nice and helpful! •- Unfortunately, the info book they have in the villas are outdated and some things aren't up to date anymore. •- The Spa offering on treatments is big but quality of service/massage is okay but far from good. Quality over quantity would be appreciated. •- Also the food offering at the 2 restaurants are westernised, no authentic food and just a few fresh produce. •- The price you pay for the quality of food is not acceptable. (I'm well aware of the difficulties of the supply chain) but why not using fresh local produce and cook good tasty fresh food. •- also the service seems awkward and forced. ■ It should be the general managers and owners responsibility to provide good decent training to staff and buy the necessary tools/equipment for staff to provide an all around good experience and to justify the price the resort is asking for. There is a lot of space for improvement

The Sinalei Resort is absolutely beautiful. It sits on the coast under mature Pacific Island trees. The gardens and rock formations are a paradise. The service is excellent. I can't say enough good about this place. Tonight we sat in the restaurant over the surf, watched the memorizing waves break and lightning flash in the tops of the clouds offshore. We enjoyed the Poke and shared a brownie. The Sinalei Resort sits among the top places we've ever stayed. I highly recommend it.
