Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Only ate at the restaurant. Really good food but service is kind of slow. Staff is friendly and they don’t try rushing you out just to fill tables. Very tourist friendly and right on the main road past Tanoa Tusitala hotel.

Good location close to Apia cbd just a short walk, across road from ocean, quiet area. Restaurant looks on to pool area and nice gardens. Good selection of dishes and drinks list. Rooms well appointed, very comfortable bed. Recommend and would stay again

i’m not sure why it’s rated so low. i had a great room with all the amenities i needed, and the staff were all really kind and helpful. food from the restaurant is great, there’s airport transfers (though you need to pay 55 WST). i’d definitely recommend staying here to anyone visiting.

Great location but dirty black oily floor, food were dry, if not soggy, and barely have taste compared to other hotel while staying in Samoa. Attentive with daily cleaning but floor always black (tried spraying water on floor then wiped it then dirt is unbelievable). Otherwise great place to relax outside the bar with the pool, aside from very slow service.

I booked a room at Lava for 2 nights at the last minute after my Papa’s funeral, and I want to commend the staff—from reception to the waiters—for their kindness and respect. I’ve stayed at other hotels in Samoa, but I’ve never been greeted with the level of love and care we experienced here. After laying a loved one to rest, the last thing you need overseas is indifference. At Lava, I felt genuinely respected and cared for—something I don’t often experience in Samoa, sadly. The staff truly made our stay special. We also really enjoyed the fiafia night—it’s by far the best in Samoa! The pool layout right by the restaurant is beautiful, and the rooms were spotless. I also want to mention how much I loved the koko alaisa—it was delicious and easily my favourite dish. A special thank you as well to the lovely maid who came to clean after the funeral when I requested—it meant so much. Thank you, Lava. The warmth of your staff was the highlight of our stay, and we can’t wait to come back.
