Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from family-run beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.
Kitesurfing in Samoa: lessons, rentals and where to base yourself
Samoa is not a famous kite destination, which is part of the appeal: one dedicated school, uncrowded water and lessons in English, French or Spanish. Seki Kitesurf at Sataoa, on the south coast of Upolu, is the country's only kiteboarding lessons and rental centre, run by an IKO-certified instructor.

Had an amazing dining experience at the Lava Hotel. The atmosphere was posh yet cozy and the food and drinks were top call. 10/10 would recommend and come to again.

We booked a week at Lava hotel. Our arrival was smooth and we got a lovely room on the 3rd floor. The Good Hotel was clean and tidy. Very handy location as we could walk to the sea, town shops, market etc. Parking available Resturant adequate with a fair choice of food and drinks. Room was small but comfortable and with all amenities. Restaurant staff were attentive . The bad The lift stopping working afew hours after our arrival on Monday. It wasnt repaired until we left the next Monday. As a senior wiith a knee issue,I found it very difficult to go up and down 48 steps multiple times day. Staff couldnt say when the lift will be repaired. Maybe tomorrow was the pepetual answer. Finally we changed the room and got one on Thursday . The breakfast was included . We had the same menu every single day. So boring . On our last morning we were told we could order al a carte . Wish we were told beforehand !!! There were also issues with miscommunication regarding our airport drop off which created stress. This was due to incompetent reception staff, again. And the Ugly , last but not the least When we changed rooms the safety locker in the new room did not work. I called reception to inform them but they didnt answer and I couldnt leave a message. The next morning we left early on a tour so I didnt get to report the locker malfunction. In our old room I locked our valuables, namely passports, a few pieces of jewellery and my expensive perfume. On this instance I took.the jewellery and passports in my handbag but left the perfume in a make up bag. On our return , my Dior Je Adore perfume had vanished. It cost me almost NZ$300 I immediately reported this to.reception but the response I got was very lukewarm . They were going to check but noone ever did. The girl said she checked with housekeeping . That day when we returned to our room, i found that although the bed was made up the bathroom wasnt cleaned. Wet towels were removed but not replaced and the wet bathmat was stll there. I felt that this was how the perfume thief retaliated to my compaint . So I had a huge loss due to theft and this has left a very bad taste on an otherwise wonderful holiday at Lava Hotel. The way reception disregarded my complaint was not good enough. A great hotel but you guys need to get your act together with your staff

I checked into Lava in May 2026 for a short 6-day trip- Lava was great! It provided my sister and me with everything we needed for that quick visit to the hospital. It’s close to everything you need. The staff were excellent! I really love Lava’s vibe - it’s easygoing, and the breeze from the bottom, straight from the sea, was beautiful. I loved it so much that I’m heading back to Samoa again, and this time I’ll be staying with my family for another short trip. Thanks, Lava!

Room was small and we could hear noise from the bar. Great location in Apia, short walk to town. Pool was lovely and breakfast buffet had lots of options. Lift broke down two days in a row and the place looked like it needs a bit of a tidy up. Staff very helpful.

We had the best experience staying at Lava hotel. The communication was great and they stayed in touch to help us when our flights were cancelled and delayed. The staff were always so kind and accommodating. The restaurant food was so good that it was mostly locals eating there so you know it’s good. Thank you lava for making our vacation easy and enjoyable.
