Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

We travelled to Samoa for our wedding at Return to Paradise Resort, and it was truly everything we could have asked for and more. Our wedding day was absolutely magical — more beautiful and emotional than we ever imagined. From the stunning setting to the thoughtful touches, every moment felt so personal and full of love. The staff made us feel incredibly special and cared for, and we will always treasure that day as one of the happiest of our lives. We actually arrived in the early hours of the morning, but the team were there to warmly welcome us, which immediately made us feel comfortable and cared for. The hospitality throughout our entire stay was incredible. The buffet breakfasts were fantastic, and the staff were always so friendly and attentive. We stayed for 9 nights, and it still didn’t feel like enough. Every single staff member was exceptional and made us feel so welcomed, like part of the family. The entire team around the resort went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. The food was absolutely beautiful, and every meal we had came with no complaints at all. The pricing was what we expected for a resort, and when converting it back to NZ dollars, it was very similar to what we would normally pay at home. We also loved experiencing the Fia Fia night, the Maeva band, and the Sunday lunch — they were real highlights of our stay and made the whole experience even more special. My brother-in-law also experienced the lomi lomi massage service and said it was absolutely amazing. We also celebrated our birthdays the night before our wedding, and the team made such a thoughtful effort to acknowledge it, which made us feel incredibly loved and cared for. Planning a wedding from afar in New Zealand wasn’t always easy, especially when Florrie unfortunately had to go on sick leave during the process. There were moments where I worried about how everything would come together, but a few weeks before we left New Zealand, everything was organised and reassured, which gave us so much peace of mind. A special mention to our wedding planners — Florrie for helping begin the planning, Sina who stepped in and took over seamlessly, and Krystle. We are so grateful for the care, support, and organisation they put into making our day so perfect. Although the resort is a bit further from Apia, we knew this beforehand, and having a rental car made it very easy to get around. The location is so peaceful and beautiful, which made it the perfect place for such an important time in our lives. We did have a small issue one day with housekeeping where our rubbish wasn’t removed and clean towels weren’t left or the room serviced, but once we mentioned it, it was rectified straight away. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, every member of the team made us feel truly at home. They went above and beyond to ensure our wedding and stay were nothing short of extraordinary, and we felt completely cared for and loved the entire time. This resort will always hold a very special place in our hearts, and we can’t wait to return to celebrate our one-year anniversary and create even more unforgettable memories. Mr and Mrs Taurima x

Spectacular place, hubby and I stayed three nights two weeks ago. The front villa was beautiful with such amazing views, the food selection was fantastic and delicious, but what we enjoyed the most was the SERVICE by all staff members we dealt with. Everyone was so kind and treated us with so much respect and love. I feel so proud as a Samoan returning for a short break, that we were treated and served by our own people with so much love and respect. Return to Paradise is now our go to escape when we go back. We’ve stayed at other resorts and hotels in Samoa, but this is our favorite so far as it ticks all the right boxes for us. We are so looking forward to coming back next time we visit home. Thank you so much for making our short stay enjoyable and so much fun. Oh and special faafetai tele lava i le afioga Afamasaga Su’a Ramona for always checking up on us, making sure we were all good and enjoying ourselves. Even chatting and taking photos with us. Faafetai faafetai tele lava mo le tautua matagofie, looking forward to our next break there from busy Auckland ☺️ The Vaifales

Went for day at beach and lunch only, didn't stay in resort. Two lovely restaurants and a poolside café. One restaurant has fale overlooking water also gets nice breeze. Had lunch of BLT and fish and chips, both very nice. Good options on menu and drinks selection. In other restaurant had Sunday toonai buffet as an option. Plenty of sun loungers both around pool and on beach. Water crystal clear, great for snorkeling. Great location on south side of island, good to relax and unwind while being only approx 40 minutes from Apia.

From the moment we arrived at Return to Paradise Resort, we were blown away by the breathtaking beachfront, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical surroundings. The staff welcomed us like family, making every moment feel personal and warm — from morning greetings to helpful tips for exploring the island. The resort offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. We spent our days snorkelling right off the beach, lounging by the pool with a refreshing cocktail, and enjoying the spectacular sunsets that made every evening magical. The cultural shows were vibrant and fun, giving us a real taste of Samoan traditions. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed, and while the resort isn’t ultra-luxury, its charm, natural beauty, and incredible hospitality more than make up for it. Every meal we tried was fresh and flavorful, and the staff were always happy to recommend local dishes and activities. Return to Paradise is more than a resort — it’s an experience. We left feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and already planning our next visit. If you’re looking for authentic Samoan hospitality, stunning beaches, and a truly relaxing island escape, this is the place to be!

Absolutely spectacular! The loveliest people in the world. Room exceptionally spacious. Stunning location. Warm clear waters & first class snorkeling. Easily saw more than 100 different types of fish. Fiafia night and maeva show were outstanding. Staff are tremendous, hard working, take pride in their craft & go out of their way to make our stay very special indeed. The perfect place for a wedding, with everything you need. Well planned excursions available from reception. Buffet & Umu were the best we had all holiday. Church service and clam tour were very special. Look forward to returning.
