Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from family-run beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.
Kitesurfing in Samoa: lessons, rentals and where to base yourself
Samoa is not a famous kite destination, which is part of the appeal: one dedicated school, uncrowded water and lessons in English, French or Spanish. Seki Kitesurf at Sataoa, on the south coast of Upolu, is the country's only kiteboarding lessons and rental centre, run by an IKO-certified instructor.

We stayed at the Tanoa Hotel in Apia for 10 days and had a wonderful time. The staff were amazing throughout our stay, kind, friendly and always happy to help. The accommodation was clean and tidy, and we felt very comfortable the whole time. Food at the hotel was good, though the menu options were a little limited. A highlight of our trip was the Fia Fia night, which was fantastic and gave us a real taste of Samoan culture. Would definitely recommend staying here.

The service from concierge to waiting staff and room cleaners was amazing. The location of the hotel is fantastic, so close to the centre to Apia, markets, etc. Pool is lovely and big, will definitely come back again.

Sadly not for us, fantastic clean tidy and welcoming entrance. Ended there. Rooms very dark, leaking aircon, bloody hard to open ranch slider, dirty tiles, no top sheet on one bed. Food was unappealing. However, great shower and towels, nice gardens. Served the purpose but would not choose to stay again.

Best hotel I've stayed in. Absolutely beautiful amenities and friendly staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Special shout outs to Mercy, Otilia, Lei, Misialofa, Imo, and Apollos who made us feel very welcome and made sure our stay was fantastic. The hotel is really close to tourist attractions so easily walkable but if you want to take a taxi we only got charged like 5 tala to get anywhere in town.

We stayed here with a toddler 2 weeks ago and were pleased with our overall experience at Tanoa Tusitala. Our shuttle 🚕 to and from the airport was early and our 2nd driver was really funny and friendly. The hotel itself is beautiful even though it’s a little dated. We loved the indoor-outdoor flow of the design and the Samoan carvings, artwork 🖼️ and statues dotted around the hotel as well as the many fruit trees. Breakfast buffet is decent and serves some local dishes and fruits 🍌🥭 The restaurant and room service however has a very limited menu and serves western food only. Their fruit smoothie and pina colada were our faves! 🍹Tanoa is close to so many restaurants and cafes ☕️ within walking distance as well as Savalalo market. Both swimming pools are clean and our toddler really loved the kids pool. We especially liked the service from the bartender with the cool playlist, the young man at the front desk and the girls from breakfast buffet. Thank you Tanoa! 🌺🌸 - Ana

This rating is purely based on the restaurant and quality of the food. We had a table of 18 and each and every one of us were extremely disappointed. Food wasn’t fresh at all, especially the chicken, steak and beef. Food was cold too when bought out, so that made us feel uneasy. Majority refused to eat their meals, and some were left feeling sick. Being a well known hotel in Samoa, their food should be exceptional! but this wasn’t the case 🥲 I hope Tanoa look into their kitchen hand and produce and do better.
