Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

How we calculate this
Kalena's 9.2 is a weighted average across 28 verified reviews aggregated from public OTA listings (Expedia, Booking.com) and Google Reviews. Each source's own headline rating may differ — Expedia, for instance, only counts reviews submitted through Expedia.

I stayed at central Apia's Talofa Inn during early 2026, I absolutely loved it. Good rooms and wifi, friendly helpful staff and ability to use kitchen to keep costs down terrific with a supermarket across the road perfect. Would def stay there again.

Great location and super friendly staff. We paid 50 tala to check in early after an overnight flight. Our room had a toilet and shower in the room, noted other reviews said there's was outside the room so must just depend on what you book. Continental Breakfast is included and you can get a hot breakfast at a cost.. seems to be different depending on who is making it. You can park on site, but they had to come unlock the gate for us to go out early in the morning, someone always seemed to be around. One of the ladies gave us a bunch of recommendations of what to see during our time on the island.

The main disadvantage is the bathroom which was private but outside the room. Taxis seem to have trouble finding this hotel so make sure you have their phone number handy to provide directions to the driver. Great location in downtown Apia. The room had good air conditioning and a fridge. There was also a wash basin which was useful giving it is not an en-suite.

Fantastic location, very clean room, excellent AC, and breakfast and coffee provided. Windows don’t protect from road noise however, so be prepared for the locals to share their music tastes with you at all hours. Sundays you can hear the churches come alive from the shared balcony. Great base for exploring downtown Apia. Staff are friendly, helpful, and you can hire vehicles on site.
