Best stays in Samoa: where to sleep across Upolu and Savai'i
Samoa's accommodation runs the full spectrum — from US$30-a-night beach fales where you sleep open-air to the lagoon, through family-run boutique hotels in Apia, all the way to five-star resorts with overwater bungalows. Picking the right one depends entirely on what you're after: barefoot authenticity, restaurant variety, or a swim-up bar.
Best stays in Upolu, Samoa
Upolu is where most Samoa trips start. Faleolo International Airport, the capital Apia, and the bulk of the country's resort-tier accommodation all sit here. The south coast (Lalomanu, Lotofaga, Siumu) is the postcard side; the north has Apia and the working harbour.
Best resorts in Samoa
If you want pool, multiple restaurants, an actual spa and a structured kids' programme, you want a resort — and Samoa's resort tier is concentrated on Upolu's south coast plus a handful on Savai'i. Below are the published full-service properties across both islands.
Best beaches in Samoa
Samoa's beaches are the kind that consistently top "world's best" lists and somehow stay uncrowded. Most are on customary land — you'll pay a small village fee (typically WST 5–20) at the gate, which goes back into maintaining the site. Below: the ones our travellers come back about.

Place was ok. I didn’t mind my room but we had to ask for housekeeping after day 3. The Wednesday night buffet $75 was disappointing. Compared it to Sifa Afi we did Tues night $75 and theirs was worth it. Orator buffet felt like we were ripped off. Communication could be better. We had to ask them when we could start eating. They had a wedding on the same night outside and we hung out in the foyer and were told to keep it down due to the function. Disappointed as we were a big family group who had paid to stay there. There are no activities there either. Parents bathroom had no hot water for the 6 days we stayed there and we told staff numerous times but never got fixed. Rats in neph/nieces cabin at the top so they were moved. Breakfast was good tho. We stayed here for our family reunion and won’t stay there again or recommend. Place is good for those who just need somewhere to sleep.

Everything needs upgrading, service is non existent when you need something repaired, rooms are old and allow critters to enter. Showers were either hot or cold. Only get wifi in reception and not in the rooms. The only best thing is the air con. Only saw staff when they came together to sing goodbye. Don’t recommend. Staff mean well but the place lacking into many ways.

My family and I stayed at Orator Hotel in Villa 5, which sleeps four. The villa was nice and comfortable, and we appreciated the peaceful atmosphere. The staff were lovely, especially Joseph, whose friendliness really stood out. However, several issues made our stay disappointing. The bathroom needs attention — the shower was either extremely hot or freezing cold with no in-between, and the water pressure was very poor. Breakfast was nice, but for the first three days we had no idea that eggs could be cooked to order. Staff didn’t mention it, and there was no sign displayed. We only found out from another guest, and were later told a sign should have been there. We had lunch at the hotel during the first couple of days but didn’t return after waiting nearly two hours each time for our food. We later learned the delay was because staff were preparing a private buffet for the owner and their friends while paying guests were left waiting. That felt rude and unfair. The place also needs major refurbishing and maintenance. The pool had missing and loose tiles, which is hazardous. My brother even had to move rooms due to a leaking ceiling. There are also what feels like a thousand pot plants everywhere, making the space look cluttered and overwhelming. Overall, it was a hit-and-miss experience, and we would not return or recommend it to family and friends. Sorry Orator but you need to do better!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. Everyone was lovely, especially Iva and Melita, and it is so quiet. Receptionists were also so lovely. Although going through renovations they still did so well keeping the customer service up. Would definitely be back again soon xx

The hotel was great for us overall, though it could use a bit of a refresh as it’s starting to feel a little dated. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the swimming pool, conveniently located right outside our villa, was a highlight of our stay. This hotel was truly amazing when it first opened, and we would love to see it restored with some updates to bring it back to its full potential.
