Samoa's national day, commemorating independence from New Zealand administration on 1 January 1962 (celebrated 1 June by convention). Flag-raising at the Mulinu'u Peninsula, parades, traditional events. Government offices and most shops closed; resorts operate normally with extra cultural programming for guests.
