Recycling Initiative Shows Community Spirit in Fiji
A recycling initiative in Fiji highlights how individuals are making a difference, offering lessons and inspiration for sustainable tourism in Samoa.

It's always heartening to read about communities taking positive steps towards sustainability. A recent article from Fijivillage shares the story of Petero Senianitu, a farmer in Fiji's Nadi region, who is turning recyclable plastic bottles and aluminium cans into extra income. This initiative, called 'Return and Earn', pays people 5 cents for each clean container. Petero has been participating for three years, not only earning money to support his family and piggery business but also helping to keep his community cleaner.
His efforts demonstrate how individual actions can have a significant impact, both economically and environmentally. Petero hopes others will see value in discarded items rather than just waste, a sentiment we at Kalena strongly echo. While this particular scheme is in Fiji, it serves as a wonderful example of how such programmes can benefit local communities and the environment.
